Condition Monitoring & ManagementAlso known as: Prothrombin Time with INR. This test shows how long your blood takes to clot. It is used mainly for people taking warfarin (Coumadin) to make sure the dose is keeping the blood thin enough to prevent clots, but not so thin that it causes bleeding.
Consider this test if you take warfarin, recently changed your dose, started or stopped a medicine or supplement that interacts with it, or have a health or diet change. It can also be used to check clotting before a procedure.

Foods high in vitamin K (such as leafy greens), alcohol, antibiotics, supplements and illness can all change your INR. Try to keep your diet consistent.
Go to an emergency room for serious bleeding, a head injury, black or bloody stools, or severe headache while taking blood thinners.
This depends on how stable your results are. It can be weekly after starting or changing a dose, and monthly once you are stable.
